Self Help with Depression

If you feel that you are depressed, it is important to seek the help of the proper professionals. It is also important that you learn to incorporate things into your life to help you cope. Following are some tips on how to help yourself if you are depressed.

Don't Give Up on the Pros

Depression is a common illness, and there are a plethora of qualified professionals who can help. Sometimes this involves medication and often it also involves different types of talk therapy. It is always important to reach out to the professionals for help with depression, but also understand that not all therapists and patients are a good match. If after several visits you still do not feel comfortable or pleased with one therapist in particular, don't be afraid to ask if a different therapist is available for you to try or go to a different treatment center all together. Mental health professionals completely understand that different people respond differently to certain strategies or personality types, and if they are good at what they do, they will be more concerned that you receive the most effective care possible and not at all be offended if you want to see what someone else can do for you. Some people respond better to cognitive type therapies that help you to change the way you are thinking while others respond better to behavioral type therapies that help you to train yourself to act differently. Most people find that a combination of the two is most helpful. Medication can also be very helpful, but it is widely known that finding the right medication in the right dosage can be far from an exact science. It isn't completely understood why, but the fact remains that different people respond to different anti-depressants medications differently. It may even be possible that a medication that did not help in the past is very effective during the current depressive episode. Quality mental health professionals will work diligently to find the right combination of therapy and medication, but you must be patient and trust the process. Sometimes it may require a bit of experimentation to get the combination that is best for you, so just don't give up. Follow your doctors orders as precisely as possible and be very honest about how well the treatment is or is not working. Depression can be a very difficult illness to conquer, but as long as you persevere you will eventually find a plan that works for you.

Try Self Help as Well

There are so many self help books and programs on the market geared toward depression. Each of them have different levels of effectiveness for different people at different times. The only real way to see which ones might work for you is to give them a try.  Usually you can quickly tell whether the self help material is going to speak to you or not. You can find all sorts of self help materials online and at your local bookstore. The public library is another great resource.
